WSBTV.com: Before getting the call to join the cast … were you a fan of the show?
Kandi Burruss: Definitely, definitely…I was a fan. I used to TiVo it…me and my fiancé.
WSBTV.com: There are a lot of folks who don’t know who you are. You’re a former member of the R&B group Xscape, not to mention a successful songwriter. You’ve written for Destiny’s Child, Mariah Carey and TLC just to name a few. And I hear you’re back in the studio?
Kandi Burruss: Yes, I am … and I am so excited. I’m doing a new album … and I’m in negotiations right now. I’ve just been in the studio working with so many great producers for the project … so many Grammy winning producers, so I know this album is going to come together and be crazy.
WSBTV.com: Are you doing some writing yourself?
Kandi Burruss: Oh yeah, they’re producing it, but I’m doing some writing. I plan to collaborate on some songs, but some songs I will write by myself. It is good to get other people’s vibe and mix it with your own.

WSBTV.com: What’s in your iPod, your mp3 player? What type of music are you listening to?
Kandi Burruss: Well honestly, because I write a lot, I’m listening to a lot of songs that I write … or artists that I’m interested in working with. But a lot of times, I just listen to the radio to see what’s hot right now and what people are listening to.
WSBTV.com: What’s your inspiration? What drives the writing process for you?
Kandi Burruss: Well actually … everything that I go through day-to-day inspires a song. A lot of relationships that I’ve been in…past relationships or even stuff that my friends are going through. I end up writing songs about it. I wrote a song about my friend and her relationship, and at first I wasn’t going to play it for her, but I played it for her recently and she started breaking down in tears. That’s how I felt at the moment.
WSBTV.com: Do you still keep in touch with the former members of Xscape?
Kandi Burruss: Well, Tiny and I are still cool…we still hang out and we talk all the time. But I don’t really talk as much to the others, the sisters.
WSBTV.com: For folks who don’t know… Tiny is rapper T.I.’s longtime girlfriend and also a former member of the group Xscape. Were you there for her during that entire federal weapons case ordeal involving T.I.?
Kandi Burruss: To be honest, we don’t really talk about that. To me, she’s a very free person, she just lives her life. She doesn’t let all that stuff get her down. She doesn’t care about what people say on the blogs. We talk about it with each other and we laugh about it because a lot of times it is the same people over and over and sometimes you can tell it is someone you know and doesn’t like you, so we laugh about it.
WSBTV.com: You were born and raised in Atlanta. Where are fans most likely to run into you around town?
Kandi Burruss: I definitely have to keep my hair done, so you’ll see me at Blendz Salon in Atlanta’s west end and I live in the Fayetteville area. I love to shop at Karen Millen in Lenox Square. It’s just something about that store, the way she tapers the cloths. You’ll see me at the movies too.
WSBTV.com: What is off-limits in terms of the show?
Kandi Burruss: As far as my daughter is concerned, I’m not going to do anything to make her feel uncomfortable. Anything that I think will upset her…I don’t let that get around her. You may see her hanging out in the studio…she enjoys stuff like that.
WSBTV.com: Last season, we saw a lot of cliques on the show. Is there any fellow cast member that you would align yourself with on the show?
Kandi Burruss: I can’t really say…you’ll have to look forward to that…but I will tell you I’m a cool person that can just blend in with anyone.
WSBTV.com: I see a gigantic rock on your finger. Are there wedding bells in the future?
Kandi Burruss: I’m engaged. His name is A.J. He dibbles and dabbles in the industry. That’s not what he mainly does for a living.
WSBTV.com: What do you think the show will do for your career??
Kandi Burruss: I think it will allow people to get to know more about me…and the people who may have wanted to know what happened to Xscape or what is Kandi doing. They’ll get to see what my life is like behind the scenes.Kandi Atlanta house wife interview
