Meet Nakiesia Reid, Ms. Reid if your Nasty
Her name is Nakiesia Reid and she is a hot new writer Born as a Jamaican native, this rising author adjusted well to the American life at a young age. Language Arts became one of her favorite subjects since the third grade, but not knowing what her true passion was, Nakiesia found the love for science, which led her to believe that she was destined to be a doctor. Always the one to be deeply involved in her academics, and a honor roll student, a classmate once loaned her Omar Tyree’s novel, ‘Flyy Girl’, for the very first time in her sophomore year in high school. After reading, it was then that Ms. Reid realized that she was exposed to another way of life through the page turning novel. It was her very first urban fiction read and she was amazed at how much the book drew her in.
From that day forward, Reid always imagined herself painting a story that others could connect to. She didn’t dwell long on the idea, because by that time, going off to college seemed more important. With the pursuit to achieve her dream as a physician, Nakiesia attended college and majored in Biology. She became a member of the American Medical Student Association, with the belief that she was on her way to fulfilling her destiny. Year after year, semester after semester, Reid still didn’t feel as fulfilled as she hoped. With one step closer to achieving her goal of attending medical school, she decided to take a break from the higher institution of learning. She went back to her first love, Reading and writing, which was always something Ms. Reid enjoyed as a child. She would always read books to escape from her current reality and became engulfed by the characters she read about. It was then that she realized what her true passion was. In August 2009, Reid decided to write her first novel, ‘Love Finally’. Working nights at a hospital in the Atlanta area, she was determined to live out the idea she once had back in her sophomore year. With sleepless days and some nights, Reid made a sacrifice to stay dedicated to what she believed in. Midway through her novel, she visited her local library and searching the internet to research ways in which she could get her work published and recognized. After countless research, Reid came across St. Louis’ own Brenda M Hampton, Essence bestselling author and publisher of Voices Books and Publishing. After reaching out to Hampton, Reid received a good to go approval on her work and became elated to find out that her dream would soon be a reality and she would be able to share her passion with the world through her writing. Her first published work proved to her that dreams do come true. She plans to write more books and hopes that all who reads her work enjoys them. When asked what she would say to others with a dream, Reid replied, “You must first believe in yourself and have faith in God. Be persistent and never give up, no matter how discouraged you may get.” Reid continues to write every chance she gets and wishes to someday see her work in a major production.
